Tell Your Lawmakers WHY to Oppose Cuts to Mental Health Care Funding!
Lawmakers could soon slash mental health care for low and middle income Washingtonians by tens of millions.
That’s because we’re facing a $12 billion budget shortfall while mega-millionaires and billionaires contribute a far smaller share in taxes than the rest of us.
Washington has one of the highest rates of individuals struggling with mental health and addiction problems in the country, but we don’t have nearly enough mental-health professionals, say experts at UW. At some point in their lives, nearly a quarter of Washington residents will struggle with a mental health or addiction problem, but nearly half of the state’s 39 counties don’t have a single psychiatrist or psychologist to help.
Washington state currently funds only 109 youth in-patient beds statewide for young people who are suffering mental health crises. Youth requiring intensive psychiatric treatment at some facilities face wait times of three to seven months and waiting lists reach up to 100 children long.
We need to fund more mental health and behavioral care, not cut it.
Tell your lawmakers why you want them to protect mental health care funding by making sure Washington’s wealthiest people and big corporations pay what they owe in state taxes.
