To pay for trillions in tax cuts for billionaires, Washingtonians will soon be paying an extra 65% ($129/month, or $1,548 per year on average) for the same health insurance coverage they are already getting. In some counties, premiums could double.
SNAP cuts caused by the government shutdown are impacting more than 930,000 Washingtonians and more than half of those are in families with children.
Nanette Smith, a Washingtonian who uses the ACA exchange, said that estimates show that her premiums are expected to climb $400 a month — to close to $5,000 a year — which she will have to pay on a fixed income.
Extremists in Congress are not only triggering SNAP cuts and canceling Affordable Care Act credits, they are also cutting Medicaid, leaving around 300,000 Washingtonians without healthcare coverage.
These draconian cuts are hurting families and small business owners.
“I face the difficult decision of how much of the rate hikes — currently at 24% — do I take on and absorb?” Dana Christiansen, owner of Tree Hill Learning Center in Southwest Washington told Senator Cantwell. “How much do I pass on to the employee? How much do I pass on to the families in the form of tuition increases? And most painfully, what benefits I might have to cut.”
Billionaires, and their radical friends in Congress, are forcing many of us to choose between groceries and health coverage, and putting more economic pressure on those who can least afford it. Why? To pay for $5.3 TRILLION in tax cuts over the next decade for those who need it least – the mega-rich and big corporations.
