Send Your Letter to the Editor
Send a letter to the editor on making the rich pay what they owe.
Did you know? Letters to the editor are still one of the most-read parts of the news.
Why now: Washington State is facing a $2.3 billion budget shortfall. Lawmakers in Olympia are considering more cuts to services in order to fill the hole. Those cuts would harm working families.
On top of that, Congress has slashed funding for health insurance, food service, and other basics to pay for tax cuts for the mega-rich.
We’re coming together now to ask state lawmakers to pass progressive revenue like a Millionaires Tax that would protect state programs and back-fill federal cuts.
It’s time to fix our upside-down tax code and ask the wealthy to pay what they owe so we can fund the services we depend on.

KEY MESSAGES
A Millionaires Tax can fund education, health care, and other basic needs.
In Washington, we believe that all of our neighborhoods — no matter the zip code or racial makeup — are worthy of world class amenities like quality public schools, affordable home choices, and places for our kids to play.
Legislators can pass a Millionaires Tax in 2026 to fund core programs, like health care and education, that Washingtonians rely on, while making our tax code more equitable and sustainable.
Our system has been rigged for the rich.
Washington’s famously upside-down tax code, in which those with the least pay the highest tax rates, has left legislators frequently having to make tough decisions about which programs to fund.
The structural problem with our budget - combined with deep federal cuts coming to health care, food assistance, and other basic needs - means lawmakers are considering ways to balance the budget that will take resources away from low-income and working families.
Despite not paying their fair share, the rich have amassed outsized power to shape our laws and keep the system rigged in their favor. It doesn’t have to be this way!
A Millionaires Tax will allow us to rebalance our tax code while meeting the needs of everyday Washingtonians.
Low- and moderate-income working families pay far more of their income in taxes than the wealthiest because of our dependence on regressive taxes like sales tax. When our tax code is structured based on ability to pay, our communities are better funded and everyone in Washington benefits.
Legislators are leading with courage to pass progressive revenue and balance our upside-down tax code.
We’re coming together to demand the mega-rich pay what they owe.
We are joining together today to demand that Washington’s wealthiest people pay more of what they truly owe in taxes so every person in our community - no matter what they look like or where they come from - can have what they need to build a good life.
The Millionaires Tax is an important step in rebalancing our tax code and stabilizing our state budget.
This proposal would tax individual earnings over $1 million a year at 9.9%. Early analysis shows this could raise nearly $3.5 billion a year from only 20,000 of the wealthiest people statewide.
We’re standing up to say it’s time to ask the wealthiest in Washington to pay what they truly owe in taxes.
We can rewrite the rules so the rich finally pay what they owe. Our tax dollars should be invested in the things that help all of us—not just billionaires—thrive: health care, food, child care, schools, clean energy, and more.
